Job Description: Assistant United States Attorneys in the Civil Division have the opportunity to perform an important public service by representing the interests of the United States of America in all civil actions brought by or against the United States in both federal and state courts of law. In so doing, Assistant United States Attorneys immediately undertake responsibility for a high volume of litigation in a wide-range of practice areas. The areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, actions on promissory notes, foreclosure cases, bankruptcy cases, social security cases, Bivens actions, actions brought by individuals in federal custody, actions brought under the Freedom of Information Act, actions seeking review of administrative actions of federal agencies, and actions to defend or enforce subpoenas. In addition, each attorney is assigned to one or more defensive specialization in the areas of medical malpractice, employment discrimination, administrative procedures litigation, prisoner litigation, and personal injury tort litigation. The attorney selected for this position will be assigned, in addition to the above mentioned areas of responsibility, to and area of defensive litigation with an emphasis on medical malpractice defense.

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience, and must have demonstrated computer literacy skills, to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic mail and word processing systems.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should possess superior oral and written communications skills and should demonstrate incisive analytical ability, excellent judgment, and strong litigation skills. Applicants should be capable of managing complex, document intensive cases.

Salary:
Assistant United States Attorney’s pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $45,932 to $135,519 plus 14.35% locality pay – Kansas.
Travel:
1 to 5 nights of travel required per month.
