Assistant City Attorney Positions – The City of Kansas City, Missouri

ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY POSITIONS:  The City of Kansas City, Missouri City Attorney’s office is seeking applicants for two assistant city attorney positions, one for litigation and one for corporate.   Please apply at www.kcmo.gov/careers.

Position No. 204176 – The position will be a trial attorney to represent the City in state and federal courts.  The corporate litigation unit handles cases involving contracts, constitutional claims, employment discrimination and other civil rights claims. A litigation attorney in our office frequently appears in court, including serving as first chair in jury and bench trials before state and federal courts. The attorney will be responsible for his or her own cases from the initial filing of the petition or complaint, through the appellate process.   The attorney will also provide advice to the Mayor and City Council, City boards and commissions, and the City’s professional staff on litigation avoidance.

Position No. 306459 – This position relates to legal representation of the Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department (“NHSD”) including but not limited to transactional work, such as, drafting, reviewing, approving, and negotiating contracts and other legal documents. The attorney in this position provides legal advice to the Director, management and staff in the different divisions within NHSD including solid waste, animal health and public safety, neighborhood preservation and code enforcement, tow services, and property maintenance.  In addition, this position may require providing related legal advice to other city officials including directors, the City Manager, the Mayor and City Council as well as boards and commissions.

The City Attorney’s Office comprises fifty-three attorneys and thirty support staff. The starting salary is $59,340 per year, plus excellent benefits.
